Chapter 8: Christ; The Core of the Bible

Chapter 8: Christ; The Core of the Bible

There is no doubt that the only target of the entire Bible is the salvation of man through the atonement of Christ. Therefore, we feel the emphasis of all of the Books on this aim, starting with the first chapter of The Book of Genesis up to the very final chapter of The Revelation.

We find numerous references to Jesus Christ in The Old Testament in the following methods:

Firstly: Symbols that Referred to Christ:

The tree of life (Genesis 2: 9) ; the different offerings including those of Adam (Genesis 3: 21) , Abel (Genesis 4: 4) , Noah (Genesis 8: 20) , Abraham (Genesis 12: 8) , and Jacob (Genesis 33: 20) , the Passover (Exodus 12) , the five offerings mentioned in Leviticus: the Sin Offering (Ch. 4) , the Trespass Offering (5: 14 - 19) , the Peace Offering (7: 11 - 21) , the Burnt Offering (Ch. 1) and the Grain Offering (Ch. 2) ; the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16) ; as well as the bronze serpent (Numbers 21: 8,9). Also the placing of Jacob's hands in the position of the cross on blessing the two sons of Joseph was a reference to Christ (Genesis 48: 17) , as well as many other symbols.

Secondly: Characters that Alluded to Christ:

Adam, the forefather of the whole of the old creation.

Abel who was unjustly killed.

Isaac who was given by his father as an offering. He was an only son and he was kept alive.

Joseph whom the Pharaoh had called "the savior of the world". He was sold as a slave and he saved his brothers and his people.

Moses who has saved his people from slavery, bearing their iniquities.

Aaron who symbolized Christ's priesthood.

Melchizedek who symbolized priesthood in the New Testament, blessing Levi in the person of his father, taking from the latter the tithe and giving him the bread and wine offering. Melchizedek is the King of Righteousness and peace. (Melchizedek means "king of Salem" , or "king of Peace"). See Genesis 14: 18 - 20 and Hebrews 7.

Jonah who saved those who were with him and conveyed the word of God to the gentiles. He stayed in the belly of the fish for three days (Jonah 1: 7).
